The MOMologues was conceived by director and writer Lisa Rafferty, who searched in vain for a play that offered an honest, funny look at motherhood. Lisa teamed up with fellow moms Stefanie Cloutier and Sheila Eppolito to write a show based on stories and experiences from the trenches of raising eight children among them. The result: a one-act play that followed four women through the first chapters of motherhood – attempts at conception, pregnancy, labor and delivery, and adjusting to life with a newborn.
The play was presented to packed houses at Eliot Hall near Boston. The audience – loaded with moms – loved it, howling with appreciation.
Buoyed by their early success, the playwrights expanded their one-act play into a full-length show, including a wide range of universal mom situations like gender differences, the Tooth Fairy, picky eaters, discipline, kids peeing in the playground and all the rest of the real-life comedy that is motherhood.
The full-length version of The MOMologues premiered at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, becoming an immediate sold-out success and prompting a return engagement the following year.
Next came a benefit performance at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth, NH and a sold-out show at the famed Palace Theater in Manchester, NH. Creators then brought The MOMologues to Boston's Theater District, where it enjoyed a five-week run at the Stuart Street Playhouse/Second Stage, and three road trip performances in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Fulfilling the vocal wishes of throngs of moms wanting a look at the next phase of motherhood, creators penned MOMologues 2: Off to School,* and performed to delighted moms – and dads – at the Regent Theater in Arlington, MA, the Company Theatre in Norwell and the Palace Theatre in New Hampshire. The second show's emphasis is on the second 'trimester' of motherhood's gestational hilarity, covering the dark depths of....elementary school!
Director Kari DeMarco says, "I was attracted to this piece because I'm a mom who loves to laugh. This show is just plain funny most of the time, but will also make you cry in spots. I wanted to bring it to life as a gift to the moms in our community. It should make for a wonderful night out with your girlfriends... and dads will get it, too."
