As You Like It is a comical pastoral romance complete with comical country folk, an evil duke, two lovely, young gentlewomen and their romantic partners, a disdainful shepherdess and the lovesick shepherd who pursues her, a melancholy Frenchman, unruly sheep, a thug wrestler, a simple goatherd girl who thanks God that she is "ugly", and a host of other characters. There is lots of slapstick humor for the children!!!
The Folio of 1623 records the play being entered into the Stationer's Register on August 4, 1600. It is difficult to believe that this play is still so popular with theatre companies throughout the world in 2010!
The lead characters are Rosalind and Orlando, played by Emily Danko and Spencer Canada. Their counterparts are Celia and Oliver, acted by Joy Baumeister and Jack Murray. Sophie Marshall is the court jester, Touchstone. With most of our students returning from last year, we have a great group of 22 children aged 5-15 in this production.
Assisting Director Sherry Chastain Schreck this summer are a committee of producers led by Brenda Baumeister and assisted by Selina Danko, Leslie Marshall, Mary Ellen Kerby, Stacy Canada, and, of course, a team of marvelous parents and volunteers!
This is the seventh staging of As You Like It by the Short Shakespeareans, or "Short Shakes"™. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children and are available at Wood & Things, across the street from the Riverside Playhouse.
